In Bavaria, men die on average five years earlier than women. Co-responsible is the unhealthy lifestyle that most men care for.

According to a Bavarian Ministry of Health study, men die on average five years earlier than women in the Free State. The study results were in the new „Men's Health Report Bavaria“ published by the Bavarian Minister of Health Marcel Huber (CSU) on Friday in Munich. At the same time, the Minister opened the nationwide Action Week in the sign of „Men's Health“.

In the opinion of Huber, the above-mentioned bad lifestyle is one of the reasons for the higher death statistics of men. For example, men drink more alcohol, are more likely to be addicted to nicotine, and often do not eat well. According to the men's report, these are the main reasons for a shorter life expectancy besides genetic components. Men also have not very keen interest in medical check-ups. While 60 percent of women regularly perform preventive examinations at the doctor's, the rate for men is only 24 percent.

Although more boys than girls are born in Bavaria, however, the number of men drops significantly from the age of 55, so that women from this stage of life already dominate numerically clear. For seniors over the age of 80, the highest mortality rate is most pronounced. Despite the initially increased birth rate, women over the age of 80 have twice as many women as men.

Huber wants to sensitize men for their health
Unhealthy lifestyles are usually continued from generation to generation. The past life of the father also characterizes the son. So children experience that supposedly „strong men“ drink a lot, smoke a lot, eat a lot of meat and eat very little vegetables. Even doctor consultations are neglected, finally goes „a strong man does not go to the doctor for every illness“. Such socialized stereotypes often mean that men, unlike women, often neglect their health. The Men's Health Report and Action Week are now helping to educate men better. Huber wants to inform men better and sensitize them in terms of health. (Sb)
