Study: Cold promotes overweight

06/10/2014

A scientific study by the US University of California at Berkeley shows that people in colder regions are significantly more likely to be overweight. The obesity could be beneficial because less heat is lost at higher weight.

People in colder regions are more likely to be overweight
Cold seems to be bad for the figure. Like the men's lifestyle magazine „Men's Health“ (Issue 7/2014, EVT 11.06.2014), citing a scientific study by the US University of California at Berkeley, people in colder regions of the world are much more likely to be overweight than their conspecifics in warmer climes. The inhabitants of the colder areas therefore have more Firmicutes bacteria in the intestine, which split a lot of energy from the food, convert it into fat and thus provide better protection against cold of the body.

Effective fat burning important in colder regions
In addition to the Firmicutes- were also the Bacteroidetes bacteria in the focus of the investigation. As it turned out, people with a higher proportion of Firmicutes in the intestine are more likely to gain weight. Previous studies have shown that the likelihood of morbid overweight (obesity) increases with increasing proportion of Firmicutes and dwindling proportion of Bacteroidetes bacteria. The scientists declared in the „Biology Letters“ the British Royal Society that „the effective fat burning and the conversion of nutrients“ For „Residents of colder regions more important“ is as in warmer climates.

Waiver of short-chain carbohydrates
From an evolutionary point of view, that makes sense, because less heat is lost in living beings with higher weight. But in times of heated flats and means of transportation this should not be so significant anymore. According to the American researchers, the omission of so-called short-chain carbohydrates is an effective remedy against these bacon producers. This type of carbohydrates are contained in bulk in all sorts of sweets, but also in white bread. But not only in the north, the reduction of such foods helps against obesity. (Ad)
