Study: Joint prayer can allegedly reduce symptoms of illness.
Can joint prayer actually heal? A study by the University of Indiana studied group prayers that were held for sick people. Independent doctors and scientists have found out that hearing and sight damage had significantly reduced. The study was less about the question "why" than about the result.
In the course of a study, physicians and researchers examined group prayers from the Christian religious community "Pentecostal Church" in the African state of Mozambique. While praying together, intercessions are given for the sick. While praying´s the patients are physically touched, meanwhile the community is praying for the sick person. According to the study director Candy Gunther Brown from the US University of Indiana, had dropped significantly after prayer hearing and visual damage. This has a group of independent doctors and scientists stated. However, these are only initial results, the phenomenon as such would need to be more closely monitored and explored, Brown said. The full results of the study will be presented at the beginning of September in the journal "Southern Medical Journal". The researchers had observed in Mozambique several patients with hearing and visual damage. In total, the study involved 14 patients with hearing loss and 11 patients with visual impairment.
Other studies had already made similar observations. So it can be assumed that in some people by "faith" and "faith in God" a positive mood is triggered. This mood can in turn have a positive effect on the defense mechanisms of the body. The psychologist Michael Utsch had already pointed out in his book "Positive Psychology" that meditation researchers have come to a paradoxical findings in studies: Thus, the healing effect of a meditation is only effective if it is not used purposefully. "Health and relaxation are therefore only as individual side effects," wrote Utsch. (Sb)
