Acupuncture in sexual disorders

05/21/2014

The use of psychotropic drugs can lead to sexual dysfunction. These can be alleviated with the help of acupuncture treatment. The underlying mental disorders can also be improved.

The treatment with psychotropic drugs can lead to sexual disorders such as decreased libido, erectile dysfunction or delayed ejaculations or orgasms. Canadian researchers now wanted to know if acupuncture treatment can help effectively.

They examined 34 patients with sexual disorders who had been treated with psychotropic drugs. The subjects were treated with acupuncture for twelve weeks.

Sexual disorders improved significantly
The patients evaluated the treatment by means of questionnaires. Both men and women reported significant improvements in their sexual disorders through acupuncture. In men, all sexual disorders improved significantly. For women, the positive effects were statistically significant only in terms of libido and vaginal moisture during sexual intercourse.

Also mental problems decreased
Also, the mental disorders that were the starting point for treatment with psychotropic drugs, improved by the acupuncture treatment. In men, the successes were significant, in women they did not reach a statistically significant limit. (Pm)
