Stress in the job affects the heart
Stress in working life also has a harmful effect on the heart of women
(06.05.2010)According to a Danish study, stress in professional life has a negative impact on the heart. This is not the case only with men, but also with women. Thus, women with high occupational stress develop an increased risk of suffering from heart disease. According to the study, the risk should rise by a whopping 35 percent. Over the course of the long-term study of Glostrup University Hospital, the health status of a total of 12,000 nurses over 15 years has been observed. The women were regularly examined and interviewed about working life. It was important in the survey how women assess their workload and thus the stress factor itself.
On the basis of these evaluations, it could be stated that among the women who complained about a high workload, the risk of suffering heart disease was significantly increased. The risk increased especially in women under 50 years of age. "It seems that stress is particularly harmful to younger women," they say. In the course of the study, of the 12,000 nurses, 369 developed angina and 138 suffered a heart attack. (Sb)
