High-fat fish for nursing mothers: Reduction of the risk of atopic dermatitis in babies
Health experts advise breastfeeding women to consume fatty sea fish twice a week. This reduces the risk of neurodermatitis of the offspring. Also, the iodine supply of the baby can be supported by the fish.

Fish provides valuable omega-3 fatty acids
Nutrition experts always refer to why fish is very healthy. The most important reason is usually stated: fish provides omega-3 fatty acids. Among other things, these should improve memory performance and significantly reduce the risk of acute myocardial infarction. Recently, a study came to the conclusion that fatty fish can even protect against colon cancer because of these fatty acids.

Reduce eczema risk of the baby
The Professional Association of Paediatricians (BVKJ) now reports on its website "kinderaerzte-im-netz.de" about further positive effects on health. According to the experts, lactating women should eat sea fish twice a week to reduce their child's risk of eczema. Once high-fat fish such as herring, mackerel, salmon or sardines should be on the table.

"These contain a lot of omega-3 fatty acids, which are preventive against allergic diseases, as has been proven in studies. This recommendation has therefore also been included in the official guideline for allergy prevention ", said the pediatrician. Ulrich Fegeler from BVKJ.

Predatory fish charged with mercury
However, the question often arises with fish, whether it is rather healthy or poisonous. For example, as larger predatory fish are at the bottom of the food chain, they are often more exposed to mercury. Stiftung Warentest's food inspectors have recently reported that the tuna canned foods they tested contained mercury and mineral oils.

"Too much mercury can damage the nervous system, especially in the unborn," the experts wrote. Experts recommend again and again: Pregnant women should not eat tuna. The German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) also advises pregnant women and nursing mothers to "limit the consumption of tuna as a precautionary measure".

Support iodine supply to the child
As the website of the BVKJ states, fish consumption by the mother can also support the iodine supply of the breastfed baby via the milk. Even a small deficiency of iodine can, among other things, have a negative effect on the development of the child.

Even pregnant women should avoid iodine deficiency. "To ensure adequate iodine intake, women should use iodised salt during breastfeeding and take iodine tablets (100 micrograms per day). However, if thyroid problems are known, prior medical advice is essential. " Fegeler.

Avoid algae and tang products
According to the experts, it makes sense to avoid dried algae and tang products, which may contain very high iodine doses, so as not to accidentally ingest too much iodine and possibly cause hyperthyroidism.
