Top technology, nutrition and co-tips for everyday life with diabetes
In Germany, more and more people are suffering from diabetes. Many do not know about their illness for a long time. After diagnosis, those affected are usually recommended to have a healthier lifestyle. But in most cases, additional medical treatment must be provided. Health experts explain what diabetics need to know.
Healthy food and sports
The number of diabetes patients is rising massively. One of the reasons for this is the increasing frequency of overweight and obesity. People who suffer from diabetes are generally advised to eat healthily, lose weight if necessary, and exercise regularly to lower their blood sugar. However, the majority of diabetics have to inject insulin regularly because their body no longer produces this hormone. According to experts, pain should not be tolerated.
Do not take pain in insulin injections
So it says on the homepage of the magazine "Diabetes Guide" that this process should run largely free of complaints thanks to modern pens nowadays. "If pain does occur, no patient has to accept it," says Dr. Andreas Lueg, Diabetologist and Nutritionist in Hameln. Different causes can be considered. The expert recommends that sufferers demonstrate their technique to the doctor to find out the cause. The speed of puncture could be a potential problem. If diabetics are too hesitant, it can cause pain. "The slower the needle punctures, the more painful it usually gets," says Lueg. The spray angle can also play a role: "From an oblique angle, patients often sting more slowly".
Diabetics must pay special attention to their feet
Diabetics should always be careful with their feet. Due to circulatory disorders and nerve damage in diabetes (diabetic neuropathy) sufferers do not perceive pain in the feet. Because of this, small injuries are often noticed late and may catch fire or cause infections. This can cause ulcers and in the worst case the foot even has to be amputated. If sufferers have their blood sugar well under control, but they do not have with every little injury to the doctor. For example, with a bladder, it is enough to control it daily. However, if the affected area reddens, becomes warm or hurts, diabetics should consult a doctor. After all, these can be signs of inflammation, as Christian-Dominik Möller, internist and diabetologist at the Bürgerhospital in Frankfurt, explains in the journal "Neue Apotheken Illustrierte - Extra Diabetes" (issue 3/2016).
Stimulate feet with rubber balls
To train the nerves in the feet, people with diabetes, for example, in the evening in front of the TV to grab a hedgehog ball. As reported in the journal "Neue Apotheken Illustrierte" (June / 2016 issue), these rubber balls with the spines stimulate the soles of the feet and toes. The nerves in the feet of diabetics are often the first to be harmed if they have high blood sugar levels. Therefore, it makes sense to encourage them regularly. Another option is to roll your feet from the ball to the heel every now and then. You can do that also great when brushing your teeth or in the cash register in the supermarket. (Ad)
