Observe sun protection on the beach Sand and water reflect harmful UV radiation
For some Germans, the travel time has already begun, others have to be patient. Health experts point out that they protect themselves as well as possible against sunburns on holiday. On the beach and on the water you are exposed to the sun especially intense.
Sun protection should be based on the UV index
Although it was rainy and gray in the past few days in most regions of Germany, there are always times that you can enjoy in the garden or on the balcony in the sun. Despite often fresh temperatures care should be taken not to burden the skin too much. When sun protection should always be based on the UV index, the German Cancer Aid warns in a recent release. This index is compiled by the Federal Office for Radiation Protection in cooperation with the Federal Environment Agency, the German Weather Service and other institutions. It can be accessed online on a daily basis. Each value has recommendations for sun protection. Those who go to the beach on vacation should pay attention to more things.
On the beach and on the water, the risk of sunburn is greater
On the beach and on the water, the danger is especially great to get a sunburn. The reason for this is that water, but also light sand, reflect the light and thus provide greater UV exposure. This has the professional association of German dermatologists (BVDD) pointed out in a message from the news agency dpa. Who wants to prevent the bland aftertaste of an unpleasant sunburn, but still wants to enjoy the beautiful weather, should avoid the blazing midday sun. According to the experts, the skin gets a stay outdoors - especially on the water - better early in the morning or in the late afternoon instead of between 11:00 and 14:00.
Home remedies for sunburns
If there is still a sunburn, the affected skin should first be well cooled. Home remedies such as moist envelopes can help. Quark, yogurt, aloe vera or healing clay are other well-tried home remedies for sunburn. In case of severe symptoms, cortisone-containing ointments are prescribed by the doctor in some cases for relief. Be sure to consult a physician if blisters appear on the skin, the skin is dark red and symptoms of nausea and vomiting, fever, chills, headache and dizziness occur. Such symptoms can be signs of a sunstroke that should be urgently treated by a doctor. (Ad)
