Refueling Sunlight Vitamin D is especially important for diabetics
Diabetics are at an increased risk for osteoporosis and thus also for broken bones. To prevent a vitamin D deficiency, you should soak up a lot of sun. If necessary, the intake of dietary supplements is recommended.
Benefits of dietary supplements are controversial
In recent years, more and more supplements have come onto the market to protect against disease. Their use is often controversial among health experts, especially since the ingredients could usually also be absorbed by a balanced diet. There are also contradictory statements about the positive effects of taking vitamin D supplements. While some consider such supplements to be useful for all adults, others think that these pills usually do not prevent illness. However, they may be very important for people with diabetes.
Diabetics should have vitamin D levels checked
"People with diabetes type 1 and type 2 have an increased risk of osteoporosis and thus also for fractures," writes the German Diabetes Association (DDG) in a statement. The cause of osteoporosis can be a vitamin D deficiency.
The German Society of Internal Medicine (DGIM) now points out that diabetics should have their vitamin D levels checked.
The vitamin not only counteracts bone resorption, which progresses faster in diabetics than in healthy people, but can also influence the production of insulin and thus act directly on the blood sugar level, as Prof. Klaus Badenhoop of the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University Frankfurt in a message from the news agency dpa explained.
Take vitamin D in the diet
Among other things, vitamin D is absorbed through the diet. High-fat fish from the sea is a good supplier.
Alternative vitamin D sources for vegetarians and vegans include avocados and mushrooms.
The vitamin is also formed under the influence of UV radiation through the skin. According to the doctors of the DGIM, a serum level between 30 and 50 ng / ml is considered optimal today.
However, people in Germany are exposed to too little sun, especially during the winter months. It is difficult to reach the optimal serum level.
In order to reduce the risk of osteoporosis, it can help to go outside for at least half an hour every day - even when it is cloudy.
If the vitamin D level of diabetics is still too low, they should in consultation with their doctor take additional vitamin D in the form of capsules, recommends the DGIM. (Ad)
