Summer & Heat Animals need plenty of shade and enough water
Dogs cool off by drinking and panting
Pet owners must pay special attention to their four-legged friends on warm summer days. As the news agency dpa reports, most pets can not cool off sweating. Above all, they must be supplied with sufficient water. For example, dogs only have sweat glands on their paws. As they cool off drinking and panting, keepers should make sure that the animals have enough water and a shady spot. The German Animal Welfare Association has pointed this out.
Frozen broth as a refreshment
The water that is given to the four-legged friends, should also be changed several times a day, so that bacteria have no chance. To provide refreshment for dogs, veterinarians also offer frozen meat or vegetable broth cubes that can be easily prepared in ice cube trays. It should be ensured that these are not too concentrated, otherwise it could quickly get mixed up with the mineral balance. The liquid should therefore be dosed as the owner would drink it himself.
Do not let dogs in the car
In addition, keepers on hot days ideally go in the morning or in the evening with the dog Gassi. A pet must never be left in the car. Not even if the sunroof or a window is open. That does not help. If an animal gets a heat stroke, it can die from it. A deep red tongue, panting with a stretched neck and a glassy look are typical warning signs. Vomiting, circulatory problems or even fainting are other possible symptoms. In such cases, the animal must go to the vet as soon as possible. (Ad)
