On Saturday, the first world championship in sharpness eating contest took place in Berlin. The second place went to Germany. Whether the participants have done something good for their health remains unclear.
Second place for Germany
For years, hard-boiled currywurst fans at the snack „Curry & chili“ in the Berlin district of Wedding their resistance to sharpness put to the test. Yesterday they were able to compete for the first time with international chili professionals. At the booth of Frank Spieß the first world championship took place in the sharpness-eating contest. 15 brave from nine nations participated. In a total of 15 rounds each departed a Wettesser, until finally Stefan Kuehne for Macedonia was the world champion. Silver took Germany and bronze went to Poland.
Participants had to be cared for by a doctor
According to a news agency dpa, several hundred onlookers had gathered to watch the curry rivals work their way up. It started with a sauce that had 10,000 Scoville - the unit of sharpness. The levels of severity went up to 7.7 million Scoville in the last round. According to Spieß, the four hottest chillies in the world were used. In the meantime, participants even had to be cared for by a doctor. Spieß summarized: „It was a hot number here.“
Health advantages and disadvantages of spicy food
Experts disagree on whether spicy food is more or less harmful to health. Many people get health problems after eating spicy foods such as stomach problems, heartburn, upper abdominal pain or diarrhea. But spicy spices have health benefits, as shown in various studies; but you should not overdo it. People who are sensitive to sharpness should be extra careful.
Slimming with chili
A few years ago, a study in the US had shown that subjects who ate all their main meals with chilli reduced cravings for salty, fatty, and sweet foods. This can help you lose weight and thus reduce the risk of overweight and obesity. In an earlier study conducted at a university in Chongqing, China, it was also found that capsaicin, which is found in the chili plant, helps to relax the walls of blood vessels and, in the longer term, helps reduce blood pressure in chronic high blood pressure.
