Natural Remedies: Licorice relieves discomfort after intubation

10/10/2013

Licorice has long been used in TCM. A recent study now proves the healing power of this known as licorice natural substance scientifically. The effect was studied in patients who suffered from sore throats and hoarseness after surgery.

In their study, the researchers at the University Hospital Vienna examined patients who require a particularly thick tube after lung surgery and often suffer from sore throats, hoarseness and cough.

Significant relief from licorice
The administration of licorice significantly reduced the frequency of postoperative symptoms. More importantly, the patients were extremely satisfied and complained of significantly less anesthetic-related side effects such as sore throat, cough, and hoarseness.

Mechanism of action still unknown
The exact mode of action of licorice, however, is still completely unclear. The research team is now working to decipher this. Of particular importance in this context is the anti-inflammatory effect and the positive influence on local wound healing, for example in oral and maxillofacial surgery. Find the study here. (Pm)
