Rare baby in the US was born twice
In the US, a rare operation saved a baby's life. Doctors brought the fetus out of the uterus as early as the 24th week of pregnancy, operated on the tailbone and re-implanted it in the mother's womb. Twelve weeks later, the girl was born healthy.
Twice born
In the US, a baby has been delivered twice by doctors. According to a CNN news channel, the doctors at the Texas Children's Fetal Center in Houston had taken little LynLee out of the womb after 23 weeks and five days of pregnancy, removed a coccyx tumor, and returned the fetus to the womb.
Tumor located on coccyx
The little girl's mother, Margaret Boemer from Plano, Texas, learned during a routine check-up at the 16th week of pregnancy that there were problems with her pregnancy. The doctors had discovered on the ultrasound image a so-called sacrokokzygealer teratoma, a tumor on the coccyx. This is reported to occur in infants about once under 35,000 births, in girls more often than boys.
"This is the most common tumor we see in the unborn child," Dr. Darrell Cass, deputy director of the Texas Children's Fetal Center. "But even though it's the most common we see, it's still pretty rare."
Without surgery, the baby would not have survived
In some cases, the tumor could be removed even after birth, but in the case described the tumor sucked off so much blood that the fetus would not have survived - surgery was the last resort. "LynLee did not have many chances," said the mother. "It was an easy decision for us: we wanted to help her to life."
Born by cesarean section
During the procedure, which according to CNN lasted five hours, the doctors opened the uterus and removed most of the tumor. Twelve weeks later, the girl was born healthy by caesarean section. Eight days later, in another operation, the remainder of the tumor was removed. Meanwhile, the baby is almost five months old.
Second operation of this kind
It is said that LynLee was supposed to be a twin, but the second child lost the mother during pregnancy. Ms. Boemer said after the birth of her daughter: "It was very difficult". She was also overjoyed and said: "It was worth all the pain."
For Dr. med. Darrell Cass it was the second operation of this kind. The previous one was also a success: "I think she is now about seven and she sings karaoke to Taylor Swift - she is completely normal," said the doctor. (Ad)
