Secondary plant compounds can be found in many fruits and vegetables. These chemical compounds are found in apples, berries, cherries, carrots and grapes. The plant substances can protect against serious diseases.
Plant substances protect the body
Phytochemicals dye carrots orange, grapes blue and give horseradish its pungency. And they are healthy. As explained by the State Agency for Development of Agriculture in Baden-Württemberg according to a message from the news agency dpa, phytochemicals can protect the body in a variety of ways. So far, about 100,000 of these chemical compounds are known. The group of flavonoids is best studied. These are present for example in apples, berries, cherries and eggplants.
Reduce risk of serious illness
Since many phytochemicals are located directly below the shell or in the outer leaves, apples should be eaten best with peel. Flavonoids protect the body from harmful radicals and help strengthen the immune system. They also have an anti-inflammatory effect. Scientists believe that the plant substances lower the risk of lung, breast and colon cancer. In the past, research has also shown that flavonoids, also contained in cocoa beans, can help reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke and possibly counteract age-related memory loss. (Ad)
