Study: Increased coffee consumption reduces cirrhosis risk
For a long time the myth of unhealthy coffee had lasted. Today, however, it is known that the caffeine-containing hot beverage can serve health in many areas. In a new study, scientists in the UK have discovered another positive effect: According to increased coffee consumption, the risk of cirrhosis significantly lower.
Coffee can protect against many diseases
The fact that coffee not only awakens, but can also serve health, has long been known. In the meantime, it has been proven that coffee lowers the risk of developing type 2 diabetes. In addition, scientists have found that coffee can trigger a kind of cleaning process of various organs. There have also been indications in various scientific studies that coffee protects against the onset of colon cancer, prostate cancer, certain brain tumors, oral cancer and bladder cancer. And other studies showed that coffee can be good for the heart. But that's not all: now researchers from the United Kingdom are reporting another positive effect of the beverage containing caffeine. According to her, increased coffee consumption should reduce the risk of cirrhosis.

Significantly reduced risk of liver cirrhosis
As part of a meta-study, scientists led by O. J. Kennedy of the University of Southampton investigated whether coffee can protect against liver cirrhosis and indeed found clear evidence. The research team analyzed the data from previously published studies on the effect of coffee on the risk of cirrhosis with a total of more than 432,000 subjects and found that eight of the nine studies showed a significant reduction in cirrhosis risk through more coffee.

Two cups extra per day
Taking the results of all studies together, two cups of coffee a day can reduce the risk of developing cirrhosis by 44 percent - and even halve the risk of dying of cirrhosis, the scientists report in the journal "Alimentary Pharmacology and Therapeutics".

"So coffee seems to protect against cirrhosis," says Kennedy. "Especially for patients with an increased risk of cirrhosis" this could be interesting and help to improve their health.

Further studies needed
The research team limited, however, that the benefits calculated by them must first be secured by further studies. And also, by which ingredients of the black bean the positive effect is achieved. Although there is a clear correlation between the two factors of coffee and cirrhosis - but not always a clear causality. Cirrhosis of the liver - often as a result of alcohol abuse or hepatitis - causes the cells of the organ to die and the liver to scar more and more. As a result, liver cancer and liver cirrhosis can develop. Just a few weeks ago, a study by researchers at the German Institute for Human Nutrition (DifE) pointed to protective effects with regular coffee consumption in relation to liver cancer. Thus, people who drink about four cups of coffee or more each day (600ml) have a 75% reduced risk of developing liver cancers. (Ad)
