Psoriasis by beer
Psoriasis through beer consumption.
(08/18/2010) Beer consumption increases the risk of developing psoriasis (Psoriasis), the results of a study by Harvard University, which have now been published in the journal "Archives of Dermatology".
The research team headed by Abrar Qureshi from the Channing Laboratory at Harvard Medical School, Boston, evaluated data from 82,869 women 27-44 years old who had no psoriasis at baseline. Every two years, the test subjects were regularly examined for skin diseases over a period of 14 years, at the same time providing information on their own alcohol consumption.
The analysis of the data showed that with regular beer consumption of at least one or two glasses a week, the psoriasis risk for women increased by 72 percent, according to the statements of the scientists. With increasing consumption also increases the risk of illness. So women suffered the five glasses of normal beer a week already drank almost twice as often to psoriasis, as women who drank no beer.
Since only with beer consumption an increased risk of the psoriasis is to be registered, other alcoholic beverages however had no influence on the frequency of the illness, the scientists assume that one of the components of the beer must be responsible for the illnesses. „Whole beer is usually brewed with a high proportion of barley, the raw material for malt. The grain contains gluten, and some people with psoriasis are sensitive to this protein“, explains Abrar Qureshi to the journal. The researchers are convinced that barley or malt in beer is a major factor in increasing the risk of psoriasis. This assumption is further supported by the finding that the consumption of light beers, which are brewed with much lower barley shares, did not increase the risk of illness. In order to establish a clear causal link here, the research team headed by Abrar Qureshi is already considering further studies.
Psoriasis is manifested as an autoimmune disease of the skin mainly by severely scaly, punctate to palm-sized skin areas as well as changes to the fingernails and fingernails. This non-infectious inflammatory dermatosis is widespread in modern industrial societies and is favored in their occurrence by a variety of contexts. For example, alcohol consumption has been suspected for some time of forcing the disease. (Fp)
