Schulzentrum Heide Injured by schoolchildren
Student prank: About 50 students have to be treated in the hospital. Teenagers triggered gas alarm in the school center heath. The police are according to their own first evidence. So far, no perpetrators could be determined.
(05.11.2010) 50 pupils had to be admitted to the hospital after an ill-considered prank in the school center Heide with severe respiratory complaints and nausea. Previously unknown classmates had poured chemicals into the toilet, which caused massive gas evolution on contact with water. After the first students complained of breathing difficulties and many girls and boys had to vomit from nausea, a major alarm was triggered for all rescue workers in the region and the school was closed immediately.
Police go after first clues
One day after the school prank, the police go after the first clues. Spokesman Michal Baudzus told police headquarters Itzehoe on Friday: „We follow all hints“. From investigative aspects, the police did not want to give any precise information in order not to warn the possible perpetrators. So far, it has also been unclear which chemical it was. However, it can be assumed that the perpetrators are caught very soon.
About 100 injured, 50 students had to be spent in the surrounding hospitals
At 9.30 o'clock the instruction in school center Heide-Ost was abruptly declared over by the headmaster Günter Orgis over the loudspeakers. All students were asked to leave the building. The reason: Gas development in a toilet and appropriate respiratory irritation in many students, combined with nausea and headache. The director unleashed a major alarm and the rescue workers and the technical relief workers arriving shortly thereafter immediately set up a temporary treatment center in the adjoining gymnasium to take care of the over 100 injured. However, 50 students were so poor that they needed to be treated for treatment in the West Coast Hospital and other clinics.
Chemical dumped in the toilet bowl
What exactly happened, neither the rescue services nor the police so far can say clearly. What is certain is that a previously unidentified chemical was dumped into the toilet and reacted here with the water. This created gases that spread quickly in the building and were inhaled by the students. It suddenly smelled so strange and at the same time he already felt a scratch in his throat and had to cough, explained one of the affected students. Others became so bad that they had to vomit. Which chemical has caused this, the experts hope to find out in the analysis of the water and the gas residues in the building. The samples taken by the chemists and specialists of the fire department are sent to Hamburg for analysis.
Prank could be expensive for the offender
„A bad student-prank with immense consequences“ Itzehoes police spokesman Michael Baudzus judged the situation. He assumes that one of the 1,400 students at the school center dumped the chemical in the toilet bowl. Whether the police is already a suspect on the track, was not commented by Baudzus. The investigations are ongoing. If the police actually seize the offender, this will be the „Stupid Boy String“ Definitely very expensive. Because in addition to the eventual claims for damages of numerous injured students, the cost of the operation with more than 100 helpers from the police, fire brigade or technical relief organization would have to be paid. Plus the cost of several dozen emergency medical and ambulance vehicles, which were parked from all over the region for use at the school center Heide-Ost.
Parents should watch affected children
The parents of the pupils of the Heide-Ost school center advised the police to observe their children and to consult a doctor immediately if there were any health problems, such as malaise or respiratory complaints. In addition, parents have the option of receiving additional information from the school telephone set up at 0481-971597. According to the police, the school will be closed for the time being this Friday. Whether on Monday then the normal school operation can just go on, but remains doubtful, since students and teachers will certainly take some time to process the experiences. Although some students repeatedly come up with particularly stupid jokes, which sometimes seriously endanger their classmates, but they have such a far-reaching effect as the current case only rarely. The large alarms at the schools in Schleswig-Holstein, which have been repeatedly observed in the recent past, were, unlike in the case of Heide-Ost, mostly due to alleged threats of amok, to which the authorities reacted in each case with corresponding fixed contingency plans. Fortunately, it was fortunately not so far. (Fp)
