Cosmetic Surgery: Twice as many men voluntarily put themselves under the knife

23/10/2012

The socially suggested ideal of beauty apparently does not stop in front of men either. According to a survey conducted by the Society for Aesthetic Surgery Germany (GÄCD), more and more men in Germany are undergoing plastic surgery. Just over five years ago, the proportion of male patients in cosmetic surgery was just under 10 percent. Today, every fifth patient is a man. According to the study, male patients prefer corrections such as straightening the eyelids or the nose.

Anyone who thinks about cosmetic surgery believes that it is primarily women in the medical sense who actually carry out superfluous surgeries in order to appear to look better. In the last five years, however, the proportion of male patients has risen sharply. According to the Society for Aesthetic Surgery Germany (GÄCD), the number has more than doubled. Thus, the proportion in 2012 is 1 to 5. In 2007, only one in ten treated a man.

Corrections of the eyelids and noses are very popular
"Men have become more sensitive to their looks and their bodies," says the president of the Aesthetic Surgery Society, Matthias Gensior. Most often, men undergo laser surgery on the face. In second place is the removal of tattoos and thirdly the aesthetic phlebosurgery. Corrections of the eyelids and nose are also very popular with men. For women, on the other hand, a slightly different picture emerges.

Female patients in cosmetic surgery are primarily "sucking fat or straightening their lips and ears". In the third place follow breast surgery to increase, decrease or tighten in for example a hanging breast. Men and women opt for rejuvenating measures such as "wrinkle removal or smoothing the skin" in about the same frequency. (Sb)
