Consume greenhouse salads in a timely manner after harvesting
Vegetables and fruits from local cultivation offer not only price advantages but also ecological advantages. In recent weeks, the weather for the outdoor cultivation of lettuce was not yet suitable, but the first salads from domestic greenhouses could already be harvested in recent days, reports the Provincial Association of Rhenish fruit and vegetable growers (Bonn). According to the association, "salads from greenhouse cultivation are usually tender leaves as open salad" and "they are therefore not long shelf life." Therefore, should take place as soon as possible after harvesting the consumption.

According to the provincial association, "the first fresh salads were harvested in Rhenish greenhouses in the past few days" so that regionally produced salads could be brought to the table just in time for Easter. According to the association, lettuce, Lollo Rosso, Lollo Bionda, Kraussalat and Raisasalat are the salads of domestic cultivation. The colorful variety can also be combined very well and bring the healthy splash of color on the plate. However, in view of the very limited shelf life, consumption is advised promptly after the harvest.

Keep salad in the fridge
According to the Provincial Association of Rhenish Fruit and Vegetable Farmers, salads from the greenhouse usually have more tender leaves than open-land salads, which results in a shortened shelf life. The salads are "not storable for a long time and should be consumed as soon as possible after harvesting," according to the association. Although the leaves begin to wither after a short time, salads from regional production advantageously require only short transport routes to the consumer. Immediately after shopping, the Provincial Association recommends that you "store the salads in a plastic container or wrapped in a damp cloth in the refrigerator". In this way, you can bridge a few days.

The harvest of domestic outdoor salads begins, according to the experts, only in a few weeks. The sentences are planted and protected by a fleece cover from the cold. From the end of April to the beginning of May, harvesting can commence, depending on the weather. (Fp)
