About 50 percent of all employees deliberately went to work with contagious disease
According to a survey, about every second German employee has ever come to work with an infectious disease. This is mainly because they have too much to do. As a result, these employees also endanger the health of their colleagues.
Knowingly with contagious disease to work
For years it has been reported repeatedly that many workers go to work sick. Not only do they jeopardize their own, but also the health of their colleagues. According to a new study, 47 percent of respondents admitted that they had already knowingly come to work with an infectious disease. According to a press release in September 2015, the survey was conducted among 3,000 German employees by the staple merchant Staples with OnePoll to raise awareness about health at work. A large proportion (75 percent) of those who have ever been sick to work stated that they had too much to do. And 27 percent said that their employer does not offer the option of home offices.
Not all wash hands after toilet visit with soap
In addition, the survey found that one in 20 employees did not use soap after going to the bathroom. According to the available data, men wash their hands less often with soap than women, although it is no secret that germs spread through it quickly. In addition, about half of respondents (49 percent) have a bad habit of eating at their desks. Of the female employees, this is reported to be 53 percent and of the male 46 percent.
Lurking on the keyboards harmful germs
But there it is teeming with bacteria, especially on the keyboard. These are often described as even dirtier than toilets. Employees who tap and eat at the same time expose themselves to many harmful germs. As stated in the communication, E. coli, Pseudomonas and MRSA can all be found in the workplace. Physicians also repeatedly point out such dangers and therefore recommend that you should regularly clean keyboards especially during the cold period in the office, especially if you share a workplace with colleagues.
Employers are responsible
The results of the survey were commented on by Monica Mauri, VP, HR Manager Staples Europe: "A worryingly high number of office workers feel compelled to go to work despite illness. Of course, this is not recommended. Employers need to make their employees understand that they have the time to recover at home, especially if their disease is contagious. "That executives should be a role model for health, was recently highlighted by the statutory accident insurance (VBG). Commenting on the trend to eat at the desk, Mauri said, "Keyboards and work surfaces are a paradise for harmful bacteria, so they should be thoroughly cleaned on a regular basis and your food should be eaten elsewhere."
