Enigmatic disease: Young man masturbates after a small beer in public without shame
Scientists from China report on a worldwide unique case. A young man in the country develops psychotic symptoms after consuming only very small amounts of alcohol. Among other things, he then masturbates shamelessly in public.

Psychotic symptoms in alcoholism
It is known that psychotic symptoms often develop in patients with alcoholism. Thus, some people may experience disturbances of perception or delusions during or shortly after taking alcohol. However, scientists from China now report a case in which such symptoms even after the smallest amounts of alcohol occur - in a young man who is not alcohol dependent.
A small beer usually does not cause much harm to adults. In a young Chinese, however, consuming a glass can trigger violent psychotic symptoms. For example, he then masturbates publicly. (Image: nitr / fotolia.com)
So far unique case
As the Chinese scientists of the "Department of Psychiatry, Xiamen Xianyue Hospital" in Xiamen and the "School of Nursing, Sun Yat-Sen University" in Guangzhou in the journal "Neuropsychiatric Disease and Treatment" report, there are no similar cases to date that have been recorded in the literature. According to her, the patient gave consent to the publication of the case report.

Shamelessly masturbated in public
According to the report, 24-year-old Mr. Z. developed psychotic symptoms only ten minutes after drinking two glasses of 200 milliliters of beer. The previously healthy student became very excited and started shouting that his parents were in danger and he needed to go to rescue them.

He also masturbated in public without feeling ashamed and that, even though two fellow students were there. He was immediately taken to a hospital.

Patient is afraid for his father
There his strange behavior continued. He demanded that the door and the curtains be closed. When the sisters turned on the light, he screamed at her. When he saw his father, he grabbed his hands as if he feared losing him. Although the patient closed his eyes, he could not sleep all night. Every five minutes he called his father to make sure he was close. If he did not answer, the young man became very nervous.

Medication brought improvement
The magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and 24-hour electroencephalogram examinations revealed nothing conspicuous. Other tests for the diagnosis of mental disorders also provided no explanation for the behavior of the 24-year-olds. Just as the 0.2 per thousand, which were measured by him. He'd only consumed alcohol two or three times in the three months before anyway.

The physicians therefore concluded that these were transient psychotic symptoms and not schizophrenia. They therefore gave the patient quetiapine, a drug used to treat mental disorders. Shortly thereafter, Mr. Z. was released without symptoms.

Stay away from alcohol
But only about 40 days later, the whole thing repeated, after he had drunk a small beer with relatives. The father took him to the clinic, where he again received the successful drug therapy. The alcohol level was in this case hardly worth mentioning.

When he returned to the hospital about 30 days later and the doctors heard that Mr. Z had previously drunk three glasses of 150 milliliters of beer, they concluded that the small amount of alcohol in the patient was apparently the trigger for the seizures.

The doctors advised the man to keep his hands off beer. And that worked: "Since then he has stopped taking the medicine and no longer drinks alcohol. In addition, he brings back good performance at the university (as before), "write the doctors.

Exact cause still unclear
However, scientists Da-Li Lu and Xiao-Ling Lin are still not sure why the low levels of alcohol are such a big impact. In their publication, they speculate on whether Mr. Z. may have early symptoms of schizophrenia and alcohol promotes the associated psychotic episodes. Or it could be that the patient has an anxiety disorder related to alcohol consumption. (Ad)
