Recall: Coli bacteria in Camembert Calvados

31/01/2015

French company Cooperative Isigny Sainte Mere recalls one of its products for suspected contamination with coliform bacteria. It's about the raw milk cheese Camembert Calvados. Only last month, the company had recalled this cheese because of salmonella danger.

Suspected contamination with dangerous bacteria
As the Austrian news agency APA reports, the French company Cooperative Isigny Sainte Mere recalls a cheese because of the suspicion of contamination with Escherichia coli bacteria (E-coli bacteria). According to the information, Camembert Calvados 250g with lot number 347-3, best before date 10/02/2015 and identity plate FR-14.342.001-CE is affected. Just last month, the company announced a recall of Camembert for salmonella.

Febrile gastrointestinal disorders
E-coli bacteria belong to the natural intestinal flora of humans and animals. Some of them can cause gastrointestinal infections with indigestion such as abdominal pain, diarrhea, nausea and vomiting. Only a few days ago it had been reported that such germs were also found in drinking water in Delmenhorst, Lower Saxony. According to the news agency APA, Escheria coli bacteria can sometimes lead to feverish gastrointestinal disturbances, possibly with bleeding, within a few days after consumption of contaminated products. In addition, severe kidney complications are possible, especially in children.

If symptoms occur, consult a doctor
According to the agency report, the cheese from the Normandy-based manufacturer in Austria is on offer at several grocery chains. A company press release states: „Consumers who have purchased this product are asked not to consume it and return it to the store. The sale price will of course be refunded without a receipt.“ Persons who have consumed the affected Camembert and suffer from the symptoms described should consult a doctor and inform them about the consumption of the cheese.
