Smoking reduces fertility in men
Study: Smoking reduces fertility in men
08/27/2014
Nicotine damages sperm cells and can affect the fertility of men. In smoker smokers, researchers from the Saarland University found cotinine, a breakdown product of nicotine, in significantly higher amounts than non-smokers.
Scientists at Saarland University have been able to show that smokers' sperm are less mobile and viable than non-smokers. In addition, certain protein molecules, which are responsible for the packaging and stability of the genetic information in the sperm, look significantly different in smokers. This can lead to the genetic material in the sperm being damaged and the desire to have a baby not be fulfilled. (Pm)
