Experts recommend vegetable fat for a healthy diet

According to numerous experts, a healthy diet should not contain too many calories and little sugar, salt and fat. However, fat can also do good to your health. For example, there are indications that olive oil can help with hypertension. Another vegetable fat is also often recommended: rapeseed oil.

The most popular cooking oil of the Germans

The question of which oil is right for a healthy diet is being answered by more and more consumers with rapeseed oil. Meanwhile, it is even more popular with the Germans than sunflower and olive oil. It is indeed one of the most valuable food oils for cooking and health. The Association of the Oil Seed Processing Industry in Germany (OVID) also sees this.

Adults should take up to 80 grams of their dietary energy daily in the form of oils and fats - plant foods are preferable to animal ones. Rapeseed oil is, according to health experts, one of the most recommended oils. (Image: photocrew / fotolia.com)

Dietary fats not only provide energy

According to a statement by the OVID, scientists at the University of Hohenheim have cleared up myths on fats in their diet just before the day of healthy eating.

According to the experts, dietary fats not only provide energy, but also play a major role in the human organism as components of cell membranes, thermal insulators or precursors of hormones and messengers.

This is also in line with the recommendations of the German Society for Nutrition (DGE), according to which adults should ingest about 60 to 80 grams of their energy in the form of oils and fats every day.

However, the scientists emphasize that vegetable fats are to be preferred to animal foods and their composition taken into account.

The fatty acid spectrum is crucial

"Fat is not just fat," says Petra Sprick, CEO of OVID. As stated in the communication, the Germans currently consume too much saturated and too little polyunsaturated fatty acids in the form of meat and sausage products.

The Hohenheim scientists therefore recommend that most of the dietary fats be absorbed via vegetable oils such as rapeseed or olive oil.

"Crucial is the fatty acid spectrum: Among all vegetable oils rapeseed oil provides the almost optimal composition. It also contains alpha-linolenic acid, a vital omega-3 fatty acid, "explained Sprick.

Numerous health benefits

The benefits of rapeseed oil have also been found in other studies. As reported by American researchers, rapeseed oil can help to reduce excess belly fat.

And according to researchers from the German Institute for Nutritional Research (DIfE) in Potsdam-Rehbrücke, it is even better for some people than olive oil.

The German scientists have found that rapeseed oil can improve the cholesterol and liver values even more.

In addition, pediatricians have long pointed out that rapeseed oil is ideal for baby porridge, as it contains, among other things, a high proportion of fat-soluble vitamins and valuable omega-3 fatty acids.

According to the OVID, about 81 million liters of rapeseed oil went over the counter in 2016 in Germany. The German oil mills produced around four million tonnes in 2016.

About two percent find their way into the consumer bottle, but more often rapeseed oil is used as an ingredient in foods such as frying oil, canned food and margarine. (Ad)
