Herbal remedies for diabetes and Alzheimer's
Researchers discuss and discuss about herbal medicines
08/28/2012
Herbal agents of natural medicine such as red wine extracts, hops, legumes or basil can alleviate age-related diseases, according to several studies. At the beginning of September, more than 400 scientists will discuss and discuss the successes and new findings of traditional herbal medicine. Already exciting and new results are to be expected.
Healing, preventative and soothing plant extracts
It has also spoken in conventional medicine that, especially in age-related diseases, chemical drugs are not considered the sole panacea. Several researches indicate that, for example, red wine extracts, hops, Indian basil or even legumes in geriatric diseases such as rheumatism, diabetes or Alzheimer achieve good effects. In September 2012, the 13th International Congress of the International Society for Ethnopharmacology will be held at the University of Graz, Austria, to bring together the findings. More than 400 researchers, physicians and experts from around 60 countries are expected to attend the congress. The main topic is the effect of traditional herbal medicines.
As the head of the Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences of the University of Graz and chairman of the congress stressed, is „Traditional knowledge is not only valuable but also endangered“. For previous knowledge must be documented and researched to find out how the botanicals act in special combinations on the human organism. Scientific research is quite different in this area. As positive examples called the expert „For example, an estrogen-like substance in the hops, which helps in postmenopausal complaints. Also the u.a. Resveratrol contained in red wine is known for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. "
For other natural remedies that have potential, research is still in its infancy. Thus, among other things it is assumed that the active substance plumericin of a plant growing in the Amazon of the dog-poisonous plants against arteriosclerosis and rheumatism relieves symptoms. The Guinean legume Anarcadium occidentale could be used in type II diabetes and Indian basil Ocimum sanctum in Alzheimer's therapy. But not only the medicinal plants from distant countries require intensive attention. So it has long been known that plants such as onions or garlic can have an extremely positive effect on your health.
Millennia-old knowledge must be documented and researched
Ancient knowledge about herbal remedies have only been passed on orally in millennia in all parts of the world. This carries with it the danger that this valuable knowledge of naturopathy will eventually be lost. There is now an increased interest in documentation and scientific investigation. Especially in the western industrialized nations, patients, physicians and researchers want to know more about natural healing methods and natural remedies. The effectiveness of traditionally used natural remedies is only one of many aspects, according to the scientist. "Identifying the plants and controlling the quality of the extracted extracts are essential steps before further analysis of the effects can be made," explained Bauer. In the area of ethnopharmacology, researchers collaborate closely with experts in botany, chemistry, pharmacy, pharmacology, toxicology and medicine to ensure the complex proof of the positive properties of herbal medicines. The„International Congress of the Society for Ethnopharmacology“ will take place from 2 to 6 September at the University of Graz in Austria. (Sb)
