Perfectionists mostly with problems with the diet
Many people in Germany are trying to lose some weight. Some people find it quite easy, others have great difficulty despite a strict diet to lose a few pounds. The personality type seems to play a big role here. Researchers now found that perfectionists are the most likely to fail on a diet.
The researchers from the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO) found in a survey that certain people have bigger problems with dieting. These include, for example, perfectionists who are the most unsuccessful in their diets. The doctors published a press release on the results of their survey.
There are many people with weight problems who try to lose weight through dieting. How effectively your diet and weight reduction work depends on what personality type you are. (Image: staras / fotolia.com)Personality influences the success of diets
Different types of people have different success in their diets and their diet. So perfectionists fail most often with their diet and gourmets usually have a normal body weight, say the authors of the current study. But what really causes these differences in successful weight loss between different groups of people.
Fears of failure often prevent perfectionists from making a successful diet
The pursuit of perection is obviously a hindrance to losing weight, as the constant rethinking of the situation and great fears of failure keep perfectionists from making a successful diet. Thus, such people usually do not reach their self-imposed weight loss goal, the researchers explain.
Nine out of ten people have ever tried a diet
For their study, the researchers analyzed the data of 28,000 participants. The experts found that nine out of ten adults have ever tried to lose weight through dieting. About half of people already start more than six attempts to lose weight through a diet change, the experts report. 20 percent of the participants had even tried it more than 25 times.
More thoughtful people fail more often in their diet
The scientists divided the people of their survey into five different "diet types". It struck me that if people rethinked everything or are perfectionists, they most likely did not succeed in losing weight through dieting. In other words, perfectionists are most likely to fail on a diet, the doctors say. This so-called "thinker type" was the most common type of people in the study. Among these, the authors counted 41 percent of adults surveyed.
Actually, positive qualities can be counterproductive for a diet
People of the so-called Thinker type are usually more goal-oriented and analytical, explain the experts. These normally positive qualities can be counterproductive to achieving the goals of a diet. Such people then tend to set themselves unrealistic expectations and be less able to deal with mistakes and failures, explain the behavioral researchers.
Behaviors and habits can be a barrier to weight loss
Such a type of people are generally more susceptible to self-doubt, anxiety and stress, which can reduce the benefits of losing weight through dieting. If sufferers have been on their diet for a few weeks, sometime the personal type affects weight loss. Behavior and habits can thus create a barrier for such people, explains the CSIRO behavioral scientist. Sinead Golley.
Before dieting, you should know your diet type
If you are about to start a diet, it is best to first know your so-called diet type. This will allow you to make a more effective, healthy eating plan and make your diet more successful, scientists say. It also helps you to be more aware of your moments of weakness and manage them more effectively.
Focus on positive effects and partial success
If people are more of the thinker type, researchers say they should focus more on the positive effects. This would make it easier to manage your healthy eating habits and achieve your weight-loss goals more quickly. (As)
