Particles from laser printers and copiers cause cancer? Scientists at the Institute for Environmental Sciences and Hospital Hygiene at the University Hospital of Feiburg recommend well-ventilated single rooms as a location for laser printers and copiers. Scientists at the Institute for Environmental Sciences and Hospital Hygiene at the University Hospital of Feiburg recommend well-ventilated single rooms as a location for laser printers and copiers. According to information from the director of the institute, Professor Volker Mersch-Sundermann, they have found evidence in studies that lung tissue can genetically change after the particle exposure of certain copiers and laser printers. Mersch- Sundermann had for yesterday's Tuesday, March 16 in a press conference at the Institute with the title „How dangerous are emissions from printers and copiers?“ presented the current findings on the subject.

However, the results have not yet been published in a specialist magazine and are very individual depending on the type of toner colors and printer paper, the current state and the maintenance density of the respective device. The Freiburg researchers now have to further verify their findings in further studies and investigate the mechanisms of stress.

In 2008, the Institute of Environmental Science and Hospital Hygiene had already established that people with airway and respiratory sensitivities may experience dry coughs and burning eyes due to their proximity to laser printers and copiers.

Also in the naturopathy has long been the view that the devices do not belong in closed rooms with people. Mersch-Sundermann and his team are now well on the way to underpinning the theories with verifiable facts. (Thorsten Fischer, Naturopath Osteopathy, 17.03.2010)
