World Aids Day: Number of AIDS deaths in NRW has risen

29/11/2014

Last year, the number of AIDS deaths in North Rhine-Westphalia rose slightly. On the occasion of the World AIDS Day on December 1, the importance of education, prevention and acceptance is emphasized in order to prevent the marginalization of people who are HIV-positive.

Sick people live longer than they did ten years ago
Last year, 119 people died of AIDS in North Rhine-Westphalia. These are eleven registered cases more than in 2012, as reported by the NRW statistical office on Friday according to a message from the news agency dpa. The patients are therefore on average 52.7 years old. Compared to 2004, this is an improvement, as the average age of the AIDS deaths ten years ago was still 48.3 years, as the NRW statisticians explained.

Progress in prevention
As stated in the communication, the Aidshilfe NRW sees progress in the prevention of the disease. The club announced on Friday in Cologne that this development must be continued. „If we want to make the protection against HIV effective, we have to protect those who can not or do not want to meet (...) the expectations of society“, Arne Kayser, chairman of Aidshilfe NRW, said in a statement on World AIDS Day on Monday, December 1. In order to prevent the exclusion of people who are HIV-positive, education should be prevention and acceptance.
