Norovirus infection in Neustädter Jugendherberge
Numerous norovirus infections in Neustädter Jugendherberge
27/05/2011
In addition to the numerous EHEC infections, infections with norovirus are currently being reported more frequently. After 15 guests at a youth hostel in Oerlinghausen had to be hospitalized for a norovirus infection on Wednesday evening, a large alarm was also triggered in a youth hostel in Titisee-Neustadt / Rudenberg on Thursday night due to the drastic spread of norovirus infections.
Numerous students had to be hospitalized because of a Norovirus infection from the Rudenberg youth hostel. After several students were suffering from massive vomiting (gastroenteritis), was triggered - not least because of the fear of a possible EHEC infection wave - on Thursday evening, large alarm for the rescue teams. Because of the significant fluid loss and imminent dehydration 21 seventh and eighth graders were hospitalized.
Norovirus infections required numerous hospitalizations
Around 200 students and their carers stayed in the youth hostel in Neustadt-Rudenberg at the time of the large-scale deployment. Twenty-one students suffered from severe vomiting due to norovirus infection, requiring hospitalization to compensate for the massive fluid loss, possibly with an infusion. Because of the massive vomiting and diarrhea and the electrolyte household is disturbed, these infusions can be enriched in doubt with electrolyte to stabilize the condition of those affected.
Norovirus infections are particularly common in community settings
The norovirus infections occur again and again, especially in community institutions such as retirement homes, kindergartens, schools or youth hostels relatively suddenly as a veritable mass infection. The pathogens are transmitted by the so-called droplet and smear infections, in which the virus is eliminated with the stool or vomit and then taken in by the other people. Transmission of noroviruses by inhalation of aerosols formed during vomiting is also possible. Poor sanitary conditions also favor the spread of norovirus as the disease can also be transmitted through contact with contaminated objects, food and drink. (Fp)
