Showers: Care tips for neurodermatitis

02/25/2014

Anyone who suffers from eczema should be careful and gentle, especially with regard to body care. Like the German Skin and Allergy Aid e.V. in Bonn in its current brochure „Basic care and therapy for atopic dermatitis“ writes, should therefore be given especially on long showers and toiletries, which irritate the skin additionally.

Four million people suffer from chronic inflammatory skin disease
According to the German Skin and Allergy Agency in Bonn, around four million people in Germany are affected by the chronic inflammatory skin disease eczema and usually suffer from episodes of itching eczema, dry skin and inflammation. Although the disease is not yet curable, it seems that thanks to current research results, a new developed basic treatment could help to better protect the skin of those affected by irritating influences. „The skin of atopic dermatitis patients is not healthy even in symptom-free phases. It is much too dry and can not adequately ward off external influences such as cold or harmful substances. Because the skin barrier is missing important substances that usually provide a balanced fat-moisture balance. Today, we have a much deeper insight into these processes than before and can therefore compensate this deficiency quite well by the external treatment with certain fat and protein substances“, explains Professor Thomas Bieber, dermatologist and allergist at the University Hospital Bonn.

Dab skin carefully and do without irritant care
Accordingly, especially on extensive showers and bathing should be omitted so as not to irritate the skin even more, so the recommendation of the German skin and allergy help e.V. in Bonn in their current guide „Basic care and therapy for atopic dermatitis“. Since the skin is deprived of moisture and moisture by any contact with water, it should generally be showered rather than bathed. In addition, sufferers should refrain from irritating, skin-irritating care or cleaning products, but instead use only agents that are specifically addressed to neurodermatitis or persons with dry, sensitive skin. The care should also be very gentle procedure - here, the association recommends to use in terms of dispersibility as liquid products and care when drying to take care not to rub the skin too strong, but better carefully dab.
