New period therapy allows a reversal of menopause
The natural menopause of the woman indicates that the fertility of those affected is over. This change in hormone balance usually occurs between the ages of 45 and 55. Researchers have now found that treating the blood can reverse the effects of menopause. Women regain their period through this type of treatment.
Greek scientists from the Greek Genetics Clinic in Athens found in their study that by treating the blood of older women, the ovaries can be rejuvenated. As a result, it will be possible in the future to reverse the menopause of women, the researchers report. Usually, doctors use this type of blood treatment to heal wounds faster. Now researchers managed to reverse the natural course of menstruation of various women. Among them was a forty-year-old woman whose menopause had already occurred five years ago. The results of the scientists were presented at this year's meeting of the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology.
When women come to menopause, they lose their fertility. Many women suffer from menopause because they want another child. Researchers have now succeeded in reversing menopause by treating the blood. (Picture: Picture-Factory / fotolia.com)Platelet-rich plasma can reverse menopause in older women
For their treatment, the physicians used so-called platelet-rich plasma (also called platelet-rich plasma or PRP). This is used to trigger the growth of tissue and blood vessels. This causes a stimulated tissue regeneration, which is usually used to repair damaged bones and muscles, the experts explain to "The New Scientist".
In treated women, the menstrual cycle restarts
The scientists injected the platelet-rich plasma into the ovaries of various women who had previously experienced menopause. The treatment actually caused the menstrual cycles to be started new. The treated women were again able to get their period. There are various speculations that trigger menopause altogether. Scientists have discovered over the last few years that hormones are often not the cause of the symptoms. But there were also studies that claimed that menopause is triggered by men's preferences.
Experts plan to implant eggs in a uterus
After the "restart" of the menstruation, the researchers began to take some women's eggs and examine them. The experts were interested in the possibility of implanting extracted eggs into the uterus. For example, affected women could become pregnant at a later age and have children. This would certainly delight a lot of women who, for example, have become prematurely infertile. Menopause can also be prematurely triggered by active and passive smoking. However, the team of scientists could not implant an egg to validate the theory in practice.
Reason for hope for many women with children in the menopause
One of the participating women was already forty years old and had experienced her menopause five years earlier. Also with this participant, the menstrual cycles could be restarted and the period started again. The results give hope to all menopausal women. It seems possible for her to become pregnant despite the actual menopause. All they need is their own genetic material, explains Greek researcher Konstantinos Sfakianoudis to "The New Scientist".
New treatment works in about two thirds of all women
The new type of treatment seems to work in about two-thirds of all cases. We were able to observe a change in biochemical patterns, a recovery of menstruation and a re-production and fertilization of eggs, explains Sfakianoudis. However, further studies are needed to better evaluate the effectiveness of the treatment, adds the physician. (As)
