New life-saver Chemnitz wins in blood donation city competition
About one third of Germans could donate blood, but only three percent do it. And although these donations can be to save lives. The Red Cross keeps coming up with actions to encourage more people to donate blood, including a city competition.
Donating blood can save lives
In Germany, too little blood has been donated for years. In some phases, such as during the holiday season or a flu epidemic, regional bottlenecks may even occur and the stable supply of blood products may be endangered. Experts repeatedly point out that blood donations can save lives and try to lure more blood donors through actions. For example, on the occasion of World Blood Donor Day, a major action of the DRC took place recently together with the Polish Blood Donation Service. At the weekend, the German Red Cross had organized a competition in Saxony, which attracted blood donors.
Blood donation city competition of the DRK
As the news agency dpa reports, Chemnitz had the blood donation cities competition of the German Red Cross (DRC) in the three major Saxon cities in the lead. Accordingly, the DRC counted 317 donors. "A great surprise," said Kerstin Schweiger from the DRK blood donation service north-east. In the larger cities of Leipzig (62 donors) and Dresden (53 donors) it was significantly less. "Every drop counts," said Schweiger. Therefore, especially the patients are the winners. In their favor, the action ran on Saturday in the three cities at the same time. It was said that with a blood donation of half a liter up to three injured or seriously ill people could be helped. (Ad)
