Conservationists want to ban fireworks from the cities

In Bavaria, conservationists call for a New Year's Eve party without guns and missiles. „We advocate that there is a New Year's Eve without bankruptcy. We do not want to ruin people's fun, but what's happening in the cities now is just too much“, said the technical managing director of the federal nature protection Bavaria, Richard Mergner, the German press agency. As a reason, the conservationists called in addition to the noise pollution for wildlife, the many pollutants released during fireworks, which pollute both the environment and health. These are mainly potassium nitrate, coal dust, sulfur, strontium and copper. These substances would provide, inter alia, for the coloring of the fireworks.
„The smoke of the burned firecrackers contains so many chemicals. That's really serious.“ In addition, the environmental activists point out the considerable particulate matter pollution. This is especially high on New Year's Eve in cities - „and indeed nationwide“. „Where (one) otherwise only border crossings on busy street canyons can (notice), one has it on New Year's Eve, where is popped. It creates proper fine dust clouds and smoke.“
Particulate matter is generally suspected to increase the risk of heart attack. It can also trigger high blood pressure. As an alternative to Böllern he advised against the online portal Main network for the use of sparklers. (Jp)
