Radon as an alternative to creams and tablets in atopic dermatitis

09.05.2013

The physical and mental suffering in eczema is enormous - and affects more and more people. Typical symptoms: very dry, itchy skin that causes scratching. Especially in summer, many sufferers feel disfigured by the redness or bloody, inflammatory encrustations as a result of scratching and shun short clothing. Some do not dare to leave the house for fear of the looks of others. Cortisone in the form of ointments and tablets usually only helps in the short term and often worsens the condition of the skin over time. Many sufferers, however, find a way out of this dilemma thanks to alternative light or radon therapies.

„The pathological skin symptoms are controlled as overshooting defense reactions of certain messengers, so-called cytokines. These in turn lead to the release of histamine via various other processes and thus to the intensification of inflammation and itching“, explains PD Bertram Hölzl, radon expert and medical director of the Gasteiner Heilstollen, diagnoses the dysfunction causing atopic dermatitis. This vicious circle can be broken by a so-called Radonwärmetherapie. Because absorbed through the skin and lungs Radon activates the body's own messenger TGF-beta, which has anti-inflammatory and healing. Many patients report after a few applications on a significant reduction to the complete disappearance of the skin symptoms. „Due to the positive influence of the cytokines, the pathological overreactions remain and re-establish a natural balance“, knows Dr. Hölzl from accompanying scientific studies. „The tormenting itching subsides, the skin can sustainably recover and heal.“ High temperatures and humidity even amplify these effects of radon.

Affected individuals can often forego cortisone for months after a treatment and often gain new self-confidence and thus a better quality of life through the sight of healthy skin. For therapy, patients travel 3-4 times a week, with a one-day break in each case, to the interior of a mountain, where they find the curative combination of radon-containing air and tropical climate. Depending on the clinical picture, physicians recommend radon heat therapy for two to four weeks. The completely allergen-and dust-free air in the mountain tunnel, in which patients find the natural impact factors, especially allergic people feel as a treat. Health insurance companies usually pay 90 percent of the therapy costs. (Pm)
