Researchers from Freiburg examined the antifungal effect of coriander in athlete's foot. Although the results did not show statistically significant differences, the approach is promising.
The scientists studied 40 volunteers who suffered from athlete's foot in the toe gap. The participants were randomized into two groups and treated with either a coriander ointment or placebo (ointment without active ingredient). They had to apply the respective ointment to the affected areas twice a day for 28 days. After 14 and 28 days, the participants entered a questionnaire to determine if the athlete's foot symptoms had improved. At the same time, microbial samples were taken from the tester's footwell and microscopic analyzes were performed.
At the end of the observation period, the patients in the coriander ointment group showed a significant improvement of the fungal symptoms, which was confirmed by a reduction of the fungal cultures on the basis of the microscopic measurement. The ointment with coriander oil was well tolerated by the subjects. However, the differences were not statistically significant. (Source).
