This is not surprising, after all, the cream consists mainly of chickpeas. These mineral bombs are among the healthy legumes that are "an important source of vegetable protein and amino acids for people around the world, along with lentils, beans and peas," wrote UN experts on the "Year of Legumes" in 2016.

Make hummus yourself
Although there are commercially available Hummus in different variants to buy, but it can also do it yourself. "The basis for hummus are cooked chickpeas, which are pureed and mixed with a paste of roasted and ground sesame seeds," explained Susanne Moritz, nutrition expert of the consumer center Bavaria.

Typical ingredients include olive oil, lemon juice and cloves of garlic, as well as salt, pepper, paprika and cumin. However, pine nuts, chilli oil or cilantro also fit well in the paste.

In oriental cuisine hummus is eaten classically as a starter or side dish with salad and pita bread. The spicy chickpea puree generally fits very well with vegan and vegetarian diets.

The cream is also suitable for new variations. For example, you can try hummus on an oriental matjes plate. (Ad)
