Mouse waste and cockroaches in wholesale bakery kick-off in the Müller-Brot process
About four years ago, the Müller-Brot bakery in Neufahrn in Bavaria underwent a food scandal. Cockroaches, meal worms and mice were found in the production sites at that time. Three former bosses of the now bankrupt company now have to answer to the court.
Food not suitable for consumption
Almost four years after the scandal surrounding hygiene problems and the bankruptcy of the major bakery Müller-Brot in the Munich suburb of Neufahrn, the trial of three ex-managers has begun. They are accused of having, in several cases, commercialized large quantities of food that was not fit for human consumption. According to a message from the dpa news agency, the former managing directors, including former main owner Klaus Ostendorf, have also been in the Landshut district court since Monday because of bankruptcy and fraud.
Bakery filed for bankruptcy
At the beginning of 2012, the production in the company had been stopped by the Landratsamt Freising, after mouse dung and cockroaches could not be removed despite cleaning work. Only two weeks later, Ostendorf filed for bankruptcy. The case against a former plant manager, the production manager and the company's quality manager had previously been discontinued due to its insignificance. The daughter of the founder of Müller-Brot, Evi Müller, together with the Munich-based bakery Höflinger took over a large part of the branches of Müller-Brot.
Hygiene deficiencies in food production
The disgust scandal then made headlines for weeks. However, it is not uncommon for food producers to suffer from hygiene problems. In a previous consumer protection report from Lower Saxony was reported, for example, that a bakery in the greater Hanover had to be closed because of cockroaches for several days, because the owner did not show understanding. In addition to unhygienic conditions in the production of sloppy declared food were also criticized.
