Periodic pain can be alleviated by exercise

05/02/2014

Menstrual problems are a relatively common complaint. Before or during the menstrual period, the affected women sometimes have considerable pain, which can put a heavy strain on their daily lives. For many, movement is hardly thinkable in this situation. But a moderate physical activity could counteract the complaints, reports the news agency „dpa“ citing the statement of the renowned sports scientist Professor Ingo Froböse of the German Sport University in Cologne.

According to the expert, physical activity has a relaxing effect on the musculature, which can help relieve menstrual cramps. Also, the sport is a good remedy for the frequently accompanying observed depressive moods. However, it is important not to exercise too intensively during menstruation, as this may lead to an irregular period of even the absence of the period. Also, according to Prof. Froböse women should only do sports, if they also feel able to do so. Those who suffer too much from the menstrual cramps do not have to force themselves to move.

Powerful in menstruation not limited in principle
However, attempting a moderate exercise such as a walk-in to the menstrual pain can not hurt. Also, the women do not have to worry about overburdening their bodies. Because contrary to the widespread assumption, women during their menstruation are just as powerful or even more powerful than at other times, Froböse reported in the press release of „dpa“. This has been proven in numerous studies. Here, two-thirds of the women tested could have obtained equivalent or better performance during exercise during menstruation, and less than a third of women had deteriorated in performance. According to the sports physician, women are most efficient in the period immediately after their period, which is probably related to the increase in estrogen levels. Competitive athletes would try in part to take advantage of this effect and steer their cycle so that important competitions fall into this phase, reports Froböse.

The experts of the professional association of gynecologists in Munich (BVF) refer to the positive effect of endurance sports and long walks in menstrual disorders. In addition, the use of analgesics for menstrual pain is critically discussed here. Instead of conventional painkillers, herbal remedies are recommended. Only under extreme pain can be made under specialist supervision on conventional painkillers. (Fp)
