Cinnamon, cloves and co: Christmas spices are long-lasting due to proper storage

In the Advent season, many people are busy baking delicious Christmas cookies such as speculaas and gingerbread. Often you only need a small amount of the respective spices for the delicious cookies. So that the rest can be used later, experts explain how cinnamon, cloves and Co. should best be kept.

What is nicer in the Advent season than to bake delicious Christmas cookies? Typical Christmas spices such as cardamom, cloves and, above all, healthy cinnamon must not be missing. Often, however, only a small amount is needed by the respective spices. The Federal Center for Nutrition (BZfE) explains in a recent communication how Christmas spices are best kept.

Consume after opening within a few months

Before the Christmas bakery starts, an inventory of spice rack is a good idea. Because what many do not know: even spices are not unlimited shelf life. The natural products do not necessarily spoil, but lose their aroma over time.

This is especially true for ground products that should be consumed within a few months of opening. The expiration date on the packaging only applies to sealed goods.

Who still has leftovers from the past year, relies on his senses best. The "aroma check" shows whether the scent has already evaporated or the spice even smells strange and has lost its color.

Those who like it especially fresh, resort to unzerkleinerten Christmas spices. Then cardamom, nutmeg and cinnamon sticks will last up to four years.

Aniseed and cloves can be stored for up to five years if properly stored. Only when grinding in a mortar or with a grater, the essential oils are released.

Extend durability by proper storage

Ideally, spices are bought in small quantities and not on stock. This is especially true for Christmas spices, which are often used only in the season.

With the right storage, the shelf life can be significantly extended: Spices are best kept individually - for example in spice jars or dark spice jars with an airtight closure.

They like it cool, dry and protected from light. Moisture can cause mildew while heat and odors damage the aroma. For this reason, the spice rack should not hang directly over the stove. (Ad)
