Billions surplus of the health insurance companies
Health insurance companies generated surpluses in the billions
07/12/2011
According to the Federal Ministry of Health, the statutory health insurance funds achieved a surplus of around 3.9 billion euros in the first to third quarters of 2011. However, in the fourth quarter, which has always been the most expensive according to experience, the surplus could be somewhat reduced.
Health insurance companies achieve record surplus in the 1st to 3rd quarter of 2011
From January to September 2011, the coffers achieved a record surplus of 3.9 billion euros. In comparison, the surplus of the statutory health insurance in the same period in 2010 was 277 million euros. The Federal Ministry of Health continued to report that the surplus is still being reduced by the fourth quarter, which according to experience is about 1.5 billion more expensive than the previous quarters.
The statutory health insurance companies were partially optimistic. AOK and Techniker health insurance will raise no additional contribution in 2012. The Techniker Krankenkasse announced on its website that the budget for 2012 would amount to 17.6 billion euros, of which 4.9 billion for services in the hospital sector, 3.1 billion euros for GPs and 2.8 billion euros for pharmaceuticals are provided.
In the course of this, some health insurance companies have announced that they will abolish the additional contribution. Among them is the German employee health insurance (DAK), which currently requires a monthly additional contribution of eight euros. However, health experts assume that no further surpluses are to be expected in the coming year due to the continuing euro crisis. The Federal Government apparently also assumes that this is the reason why a large part of the surpluses are kept for later use. (Ag)
