A healthy breakfast increases concentration and reduces the risk of obesity

04/24/2012

Children can concentrate better at school if they have had a proper breakfast before. This explained Prof. Dr. med. Thomas Danne, chief physician of the Hanoverian children and youth hospital "Auf der Bult". Make sure that the breakfast is full and healthy.

Healthy breakfast strengthens your concentration
Many children do not like breakfast in the morning. But a breakfast can increase concentration and strengthen the well-being. If the little ones eat cereal or wholemeal bread in the morning, they not only do not go to school hungry anymore, but they also do not become overweight as quickly.

In order for children to be able to concentrate adequately in school for a longer period of time, parents should be given wholegrain bread or healthy muesli in the morning. A diet rich in carbohydrates reduces the risk of high blood sugar levels because it is only slowly and longer lasting due to the carbohydrate-rich diet than white-meal meals or sweets with low fiber. The brain is constantly supplied with energy by the morning carbohydrates. This increases the child's reaction capacity, as reported by the chief physician of the children's clinic "Auf der Bult", Prof. Thomas Danne, in Hanover. Danne is also the chairman of the initiative "diabetesDE".

No breakfast favors overweight and diabetes
Eating children sweets, the blood sugar level rises very quickly and then drops off as strong as it has risen. As a result, the children will only be able to perform for a very short time and then a lack of concentration may occur. In principle, children should never go to school without a sufficient breakfast. According to the expert, this has one more important reason: if the children go out of the house without eating anything in the morning, they tend to be overweight rather than children eating a regular breakfast. Children and adults who carry too many finds are at an increased risk of suffering from the metabolic disease type II diabetes during their lifetime. This disease is considered almost incurable to this day.

How children eventually like vegetables, wholemeal bread and fruit
Children often do not like whole grains, vegetables or fruits. The pediatrician advises parents to be patient with their babies. Often, the so-called "mere exposure effect" helps. This means that if parents always offer their children healthy food, they eventually also like food that they had previously vehemently rejected. "Try at least once" is the motto. Children should be encouraged by their parents to at least try the food offered without actually having to eat it. Gritli Bertram, social pedagogue from Hanover, advises parents to have enough time for breakfast in the morning. "In rush, nobody likes to eat," says the pedagogue. But it depends on the preparation. "If the loaves are lovingly prepared, they are more likely to entice you to eat." It makes sense, quiet and different offers to submit. "If the apple is rejected, a banana or pear might taste". It is important never to use compulsion when eating. "This leads to the opposite and the children refuse the imposed food until adulthood," explained Bertram. (Sb)
