38 percent of hospital patients underwent surgery last year
More than a third of all inpatients admitted to a clinic underwent surgery in 2014. In recent years, there has been a drastic increase in operations in Germany.

Seven million operations a year
The number of operations in the German hospitals increased by about 25 percent between 2005 and 2011. Experts criticized the strong rise at that time and made among other things disincentives in the health system for it jointly responsible. Now new numbers have been announced.

Accordingly, more than a third of all hospitalized inpatients were also operated in 2014. As the Federal Statistical Office in Wiesbaden announced in a press release, a total of 18.5 million people had to be hospitalized in the past year. Seven million of them underwent surgery.

Half of the operatives were seniors
According to the data, operations accounted for 38 percent of total take-up, at the level of the previous year. More than half of the people who had to undergo surgery during their hospital stay in 2014 were 60 and older. The most common surgeries in this age group included so-called "other bowel operations", such as bowel dissection, endoscopic bile duct surgery, and hip surgery. In women between the ages of 15 and 44, surgeries were the most common. And in children, among other things, the removal of tonsils was among the most common procedures. (Ad)
