Number of youthful comasers in Bavaria is declining

The so-called coma drinking has caused great excitement in recent years. Many people expressed concern that both girls, especially boys, get drunk during puberty and into alcohol poisoning. But it has long been apparent that the "binge drinking" in the teenagers is out of fashion. Thus, the number of youthful comasers in Bavaria has fallen to the lowest level in nine years, as the DAK health reports. Nevertheless, more than 4,000 young people in the Free State landed in 2016 after alcohol abuse in a clinic.

Trend reversal years ago

As the health insurance company writes in a report, in 2016, according to previously unpublished figures from the Bavarian State Statistics Office, 4,392 children and adolescents with alcohol poisoning came to the hospital.

Compared to 2015, the number of people affected fell by 2.5 percent.

According to the information, in the past year in Bavaria 2,651 boys and 1,741 girls between the ages of ten and 20 were treated for alcohol abuse in a clinic.

The number of male patients fell by 60 (minus 2.2 percent) compared to the previous year, while girls and young women fell by 52 (minus 2.9 percent).

Even fewer intoxicants than in 2016 were last in 2007, when a total of 4,310 young people received inpatient treatment - including 2,679 boys and 1,631 girls. Until 2011, the number of those affected increased steadily. Since then she has been falling.

Alcohol abuse endangers the health

"I am pleased that the number of adolescents with alcohol poisoning has dropped again last year. This trend spurs us on to continue our successful prevention work, "said Bavaria's Health Minister Melanie Huml.

It remains to be hoped that the trend will continue for a long time and alcohol abuse will generally be reduced.

Especially against the background that high alcohol consumption favors or causes numerous diseases such as fatty liver or gastritis and increases the risk of cardiovascular diseases such as heart attack.

Enlightenment instead of prohibitions

But: "Despite the encouraging trend, alcohol prevention remains indispensable for us without pointing our finger," said Sophie Schwab, head of the state representation of DAK health in Bavaria.

"That's why we're continuing our successful awareness campaign 'bunt als Blau' in the Free State in 2018."

The poster competition "bunt statt blau" aims to explain the dangers of "uncool" drinking of intoxicants. In the contest, students become creative against coma drinking by designing posters. (Ad)
