Woman with donor uterus gives birth to baby

For the first time in the US, a woman born without a womb has given birth to a baby. The young mother had previously been transplanted a donated uterus. In Sweden, three years ago, a woman became mother in this way.

Women who have no or too little uterus due to a genetic change from birth can not give birth. But a transplantation could fulfill the wish of many of these women. In 2014, for the first time ever, a woman with donor uterus in Gothenburg, Sweden, had given birth to a healthy baby. The then 36-year-old mother had been transplanted the organ only the year before. Now, for the first time in the US, a child was born that way.

Medical sensation in the USA

For the first time in the United States, a woman born without a womb has given birth to a child.

The medical sensation took place at Baylor University Medical Center, Dallas, Texas, according to news magazine Time.

"We have been preparing for this moment for a very long time," said the doctor. Liza Johannesson from Baylor University Medical Center.

"I think everyone had tears in their eyes when the baby came."

Women without uterus

The mother is participating in an ongoing clinical study of the hospital. The participating women have either no or a malfunctioning uterus, writes the magazine "Time".

Most subjects therefore have a Mayer-Rokitansky-Küster-Hauser syndrome (MRKHS), a disease that means that those affected naturally can not have children.

The 23-year-old female patient who had the first uterine transplant in Germany also suffers from this syndrome.

Donor is known - mother not

The baby in Dallas was born by caesarean section. "I gave birth to many babies, but this one was special," Dr. Robert T. Gunby Jr., the obstetrician and gynecologist who gave birth to the baby.

"When I started my career, we did not even have sonography. Now we're transplanting someone else's uterus and getting a baby. "

According to "Time", the identity of the mother remained secret, but the woman who gave her the uterus is well-known: the 36-year-old Taylor Siler, a nurse who already has two sons and claims to have no more children.

She wanted to give someone else a chance for motherhood. "I have family members who had problems getting babies, and that's not fair," says Siler.

Health of the child is further pursued

The removal of the uterus took five hours, and the surgery took just as long to use the organ to the recipient.

The donor and recipient are not personally acquainted, but they write letters.

When Siler learned about the birth, she cried. She said, "I think about her every day and I'll probably do it for the rest of my life."

The hospital will continue to monitor the baby's health as part of the study. (Ad)
