Medical tips At least two non-alcoholic days per week
For some it is the Feierabend beer, in others the glass of red wine for dinner: For many Germans, alcohol is part of everyday life. However, experts advise to abstain completely from alcohol for at least two to three days a week. Otherwise there is a danger of addiction.
Alcohol is part of everyday life for many Germans
According to an older survey, almost every second man drinks his after-work beer. Others may not miss the glass of wine for dinner. Alcohol is part of everyday life for many Germans. However, regular alcohol consumption poses significantly more health risks than commonly assumed, as warned by the Ärztekammer Nordrhein (ÄkNo) and the German National Center for Addiction Issues (DHS). "Many people underestimate the dangers of seemingly low alcohol consumption," said Rudolf Henke, president of the Ärztekammer Nordrhein.
At least two to three days of abstinence per week
The experts advise against giving up alcohol for at least two to three days a week. So you can avoid habituation. The transition from "pleasure consumption" to problematic consumption and alcoholism, according to the experts, is fluent and often develops over a longer period of time. As stated in the press release by ÄkNo and DHS, scientific studies refute the assumption that bodily harm can only be expected if alcohol dependence is involved. People who drink a lot harm their health. Excessive consumption of alcohol is particularly harmful to the liver and brain, and more often causes inflammation of the pancreas and gastric mucosa. Research has also shown that regular drinking increases the risk of further illnesses. For example, it can lead to or promote lipid metabolism disorders, osteoporosis, hypertension, cardiac muscle and cancers such as colon cancer, liver cancer or esophageal cancer.
People with alcohol problems need help
Physical damage, however, is not only possible in dependence, stress the experts. People with alcohol problems should therefore seek medical help as soon as possible, but due to the social stigma, this often only happens at a stage in which physical, mental and social crises can no longer be denied. In many cases, friends, family and colleagues are also in demand. The DHS had already pointed out in the past that one should address the alcohol problems of others, because many sufferers are not aware of their own high consumption. (Ad)
