Stop smoking is worthwhile even in old age
Lung cancer, smoker's lung, arteriosclerosis: These diseases and many more are favored by tobacco consumption. It is known that smoking endangers the health and can lead to death in the long term. Even in old age, a smoke stop is worthwhile, as a study shows.

Smoking favors many serious diseases
Twelve types of cancer such as lung cancer, pancreatic cancer and colon cancer, cardiovascular diseases such as heart attack and stroke, diabetes, arterial diseases such as atherosclerosis (arteriosclerosis) or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease COPD (smoking lung): All these diseases are favored by the consumption of tobacco. Even if many people find it difficult: a smoke stop is always worthwhile. And even in advanced age, as a study shows.

No matter how old you are, it's always a good idea to quit smoking. According to a report by the news agency dpa, German scientists have come to this conclusion. The researchers from the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ) in Heidelberg report on their findings in the journal "British Medical Journal". For their study, they analyzed the data of half a million people from Europe and the United States who were 60 or older. Accordingly, smokers die on average five and a half years earlier from cardiovascular diseases such as heart attack or stroke, as a lifelong nonsmoker.

Even in old age, the waiver of cigarettes is worthwhile
Former smokers die just two years earlier. The more cigarettes a smoker consumed, the higher his risk for cardiovascular disease. According to the DKFZ, smokers succumb to twice as many as non-smokers. Study director Hermann Brenner said it was never too late to quit smoking. "Even people in the highest age group still benefit from it." However, the effect is clearer the longer the last cigarette has lasted. (Ad)
