Repel mosquitoes without chemicals

Mosquitoes are among the rather unpopular guests who come to visit on beautiful summer evenings. Many people drive hard guns against the pests, ranging from chemical agents to ultrasound and electric traps. At the same time, nature itself has a whole range of effective options at hand to keep the annoying bloodsuckers at bay. The natural defense methods are not only ecologically more useful, but also make more visually.

Some people are stung much more often than others. What attracts mosquitoes in the first place? Mosquitoes feel particularly good in the environment of water and warmth. The air exhaling people contains carbon dioxide, which is a kind of bait for the mosquitoes. This is a factor that affects all people equally. Individual differences are body odor and clothing. So the little beasts are attracted by certain ingredients in the sweat, which are more in some people and less present in others. In addition, mosquitoes increasingly attract black or dark-clad people.

Mosquitoes do not fly to the light

Even if the sentence "light off, otherwise the mosquitoes will come in!" May seem familiar to many people, the statement that mosquitoes fly into the light in the meantime is now considered controversial. Mosquitoes are mainly active at dusk and like it rather dark. It is primarily the smell that attracts the pests. Therefore, the most effective agents are the ones that excrete strong odors that confuse or overlay the olfactory senses of the insects.

Plants that keep mosquitoes away

As potted plants for indoor use, certain herbs are effective. These include, for example, basil, chives, lemongrass and lemon balm. Tomato plants also act as a simple home remedy for mosquitoes, as their leaves exude a smell that the bloodsuckers avoid. For the outdoor area are fragrance geraniums, fresh lavender, rosemary, marigold, catnip and garlic. Among the trees, the walnut tree is the mosquito repeller number one. Its exhalations superimpose the sense of smell of the mosquitoes (and brakes), so that they can no longer perceive humans.

Essential oils against mosquitoes

Also, some aromatherapy essential oils are effective in keeping mosquitoes at bay. When buying, make sure that they have not been produced synthetically as possible. The oils can be evaporated in a scent cup both indoors and outdoors. Inside, however, evaporation should not take longer than two hours. Also, not too much essential oil should be used. Four drops are enough for 20 square meters. Suitable oils are citronella, cinnamon, rosemary, lavender, lemongrass, cedar, eucalyptus, lemon, clove, geranium, frankincense, tea tree, laurel and especially neem.

Essential oils on the skin

The above oils can also be used for rubbing. However, it is important to ensure that the oils are not used neat, but mixed with a carrier oil such as almond oil, sesame oil, calendula oil, olive oil or coconut oil. The pure use is hazardous to health. It should also be ensured that there are no allergies to the particular oil.

The right clothes

As mentioned above, mosquitoes like to fly on dark-clad people. Bright clothing reduces the rate at which mosquitoes drive you. In addition, wide and long clothing provides protection. Tight-fitting garments such as leggings allow the mosquitoes to pierce easily. In a long-sleeved, bright, breathable summer shirt, the insects have already significantly more problems. (Vb)
