Life-saving from the air: As the German rescue flight e.V. (DRF) is currently announcing, in the first six months of the year alone 18,326 missions have been flown in Germany alone. So be the „flying“ Rescue service has been alerted as frequently as ever, with most of the operations in Baden-Württemberg (4827 flights) had been made.

Helicopter already alarmed 18,326 times between January and June
Never before did DRF Luftrettung's red-and-white helicopters fly as many missions as in the first six months of this year. As the non-profit organization currently reports, DRF helicopters in Germany alone had already been alerted 18,326 times between January and June - an increase of six percent compared to the previous year. According to the DRF, most emergency calls were received in Baden-Württemberg (4827 flights) and Bavaria (3182), followed by Thuringia with 1816 flights. Of the total of 28 locations in Germany, Halle received the most orders in the first half of 2014 (918), however, as many emergency calls were received in Karlsruhe (900) and Rendsburg (804). Together with the missions abroad, the DRF provided quick help during the first half of 2014 in a total of 19,523 cases.

Stroke and heart attack patients were treated in 12% of emergencies
In 12% of the emergencies, the rescuers from the air had cared for stroke and heart attack patients, in another 11 percent were injured road users, who were in need of a speedy rescue. Ten percent of emergency calls were also received from patients who were „serious injury after falling in your own home or in recreational accidents“ had closed, the DRF in their press release. Of the emergencies treated, one in four patients was subsequently taken to hospital with one of the organization's 50 or so available helicopters. However, due to the increasing specialization of clinics on certain clinical pictures, the route to a suitable clinic is continuing - recognizable also because in the first half of 2014 intensive care patients had been transported from one clinic to another in about 23% of the cases.

DRF air rescue at the initiative of the „Björn Steiger Foundation“ founded
The DRF Luftrettung (formerly Deutsche Rettungsflugwacht e.V.), which today represents the largest non-commercial air rescue service in addition to the ADAC Luftrettung, was created in 1972 by the initiative of the „Björn Steiger Foundation“ founded. These had been launched by the parents of Björn Steiger, who died in a traffic accident in May 1969 - as a reaction to the fact that in the late 1960s in the Federal Republic there were neither 24-hour-long control centers nor a coordination of aid organizations. On March 19, 1973, the first DRF helicopter finally blew up to provide emergency medical care in the event of an emergency. Today there are 28 stations (plus two stations in Austria) operating around 50 helicopters for emergency rescue and for urgent transport of intensive care patients between clinics, and DRF carries out patient transports worldwide. To ensure the safety of emergency patients, the medical quality assurance as well as the competence of the personnel is central, which consists of approximately 700 emergency physicians, 300 paramedics, 160 pilots and 80 technicians.
