01/28/2015

In several samples of the "Käserei Pötzelsberger" Listeria were found. These bacteria can cause, among other things, flu-like symptoms and diarrhea. The German Federal Office for Consumer Protection and Food Safety (BVL) warns against the consumption of twelve sliced cheeses from the Austrian manufacturer.

Twelve types of cheese affected
The German Federal Office for Consumer Protection and Food Safety (BVL) warns against the consumption of twelve sliced cheeses. As various media report, contaminations with Listeria were found in samples of the Austrian manufacturer "Käserei Pötzelsberger". The company has to recall 12 cheeses due to contamination with "Listeria monocytogenes". The following products, which according to the BVL are not suitable for consumption, are affected: farm cheese, farm cheese with pepper, low-fat cheese, low-fat cheese, alpine pearl, pumpkin pearl, village cheese, village cheese savory, Magdalen cheese, hayflower cheese, herbal hexenkas and mountain cheese.

"Products are not suitable for consumption"
The BVL informs on the website www.lebensmittelwarnung.de that the following best-before dates are affected: 17.2 - 12.3.2015 (farmer's cheese, farmer's cheese with pepper, village cheese spicy, Magdalenenkäse, hayflower cheese, herbal hexenkas), 24.2 - 19.3.2015 (lean cheese, low-fat cheese with pepper, alpine pearl, pumpkin pearl) and 27.2 - 22.3.2015 (mountain cheese). In addition, the website states: "These products are not for consumption and can be returned by consumers. Of course, the purchase price will be refunded to customers without proof of purchase. The cheese dairy Pötzelsberger fulfills its own responsibility in accordance with the food law regulations and has therefore initiated a recall of the products. This warning does not say that the danger was caused by the cheese factory Pötzelsberger. "

Cheese also sold to Germany
As "Focus Online" writes, according to a speaker of the "cheese dairy Pötzelsberger" each month a few hundred kilos of cheese would be sold to a wholesaler in Germany. "How exactly it came to the Listerien load, is not yet clear," said the spokesman. Listeria in food is reported repeatedly. For example, last March a variety of soft cheeses were recalled by a Baden-Württemberg producer. When the bacteria were found in the diet, it was in addition to cheese mostly sausage, meat or fish.

People from risk groups are at risk
Under certain circumstances, the bacteria can trigger the dangerous disease listeriosis. This infectious disease, which has been notifiable in Germany since 2001, is particularly prone to infants, toddlers, elderly and immunocompromised people such as newly-operated, people suffering from diabetes, cancer patients or people with AIDS. According to experts, listeria can cause meningitis (meningitis) or sepsis in these at-risk groups. In healthy adults, however, infection tends to be harmless. Most of the time it remains with mild symptoms that resemble those of a flu. This can lead to fever, diarrhea, abdominal pain, body aches or headaches. The diagnosis of listeriosis is often difficult, as infection and disease can take up to two months. (Ad)
