Lidl recalls hazelnut kernels due to possible Salmonella strain

Recall for salmonella in hazelnut kernels. The discounter Lidl recalls the ground hazelnut kernels of the manufacturer Märsch Importhandels-GmbH because of the threatening health risk. The products have already been withdrawn from sale and consumers have been asked not to consume previously purchased hazelnut kernels. The hazelnut kernels can also be returned to the Lidl branches without presentation of the receipt against reimbursement of the purchase price.

Affected are according to the message from Lidl „Ground hazelnut kernels“ in the 200 gram bag of the brand „märschimport“ with the best before dates 06. June 2013 and 06. July 2013. In the products „Salmonella was detected during an official investigation“, so the reasoning of the current recall. In the sense of one „Consistent consumer protection“ has Lidl Germany according to its own information „immediately responded to the information and the affected products are taken out of the sale.“ The manufacturer Märsch Importhandels-GmbH had urged all customers urgently not to consume the hazelnut kernels.

Threatening salmonella infection when eating hazelnut kernels
The hazelnut kernels potentially contaminated with salmonella were sold in Lidl's branches in Germany. Since Salmonella can cause severe gastrointestinal illnesses (the so-called salmonellosis) with symptoms such as abdominal pain, diarrhea, nausea and vomiting, the consumption of hazelnut kernels should be urgently avoided. In immunocompromised patients, the elderly and infants, salmonellosis may develop into a severe general infection that, at worst, can reach life-threatening levels. Due to the health risk consumers should pay attention to the recall, so the manufacturer's warning.
